In his first full season of racing late models, Bubba Scott earned his first win racing a car powered by a Quicksilver 357 CT. The triumph occurred last Thursday in the 602 charger class at Senoia Raceway in Georgia.
The accomplished go-kart racer moved up to the 602 chargers late last season. Bubba Scott, 14, of Dallas, Georgia, has shown steady signs of improvement. The race before last, Bubba finished runner-up by a mere 0.009 seconds. On Thursday, he started fifth and worked his way into the lead within the first five laps. He held onto it to win the 15-lap feature.
“It felt good,” the thrilled, yet chill Bubba said.
As far as engine choice, Senoia Raceway permits the GM Performance 602 or the Quicksilver 357 CT. Bubba and his father, Wesley Scott, elected to use the latter. Wesley, who races limited late models, is a longtime Mopar racer. However, the Quicksilver power plant impressed him.
“The crates weren’t readily available, and people were having issues,” said Wesley. “With the GM one, you should take it to a machine shop and check it. So, that’s why we tried the Quicksilver engine. We bolted it in, raced it, and we qualified third and finished second that first night. Then, I brought it home and checked the valves and drained the oil. Everything looked good. With his son embarking on his first full season, Wesley wished to eliminate as many variables, so they could concentrate on improving Bubba’s driving.
“We can’t get better if we’re having to send the engine off to be rebuilt or you’re having problems with it,” Wesley said. “We needed something consistent, where he could go and make laps. He’s been to a couple different tracks and the Quicksilver 357 CT just performs. We can work on him rather than fixing the engine.”
