Potomac Speedway: What A Bevy of Sponsors Should Signal

Many of today’s short tracks lack billboards and sponsors, but not Potomac Speedway. What does it mean, though? It’s more than just mere money rolling in as the Save A Lot American All-Star Series Presented by PPM Racing Products will see when they come into town for a doubleheader this weekend, Friday, May 1-Saturday, May 2.

“When you see all these different billboards, it’s like, well, obviously people are buying into this place,” track announcer Buddy Long said. “They must think there’s a good crowd that supports it. It also says a lot about how much these sponsors think of the promoters and the job they’ve done.”

Things didn’t always look so rosy for the historic Maryland dirt track. The owner of the facility said in 2022 that it’d end stock car racing by 2025. In 2024, the previous promoters Denise and Ronnie Hollidge stepped away after a lease dispute. However, it was David Williams and his wife, Missy, who came in to take over the promotional reins of the dirt track in 2025 in hopes of not only helping the track survive, but making it thrive.

Long, who’s worked in the upper echelons of the sport on NASCAR broadcasts for MRN, has also seen the highs and lows of Potomac Speedway. His first announcing gig came at Potomac at the age of 15. The difference the Williams have made stems from simply the mantra that effort equals results.

“The work ethic you see from David and Missy, they just bust their tails,” Long said. “And he makes himself so accessible. He always seems to maintain a very even-keel attitude and demeanor. It’s really a pleasure working for them.”

The touring racers will witness the atmosphere the Williams created first hand this weekend, Friday, May 1-Saturday, May 2, when the Save A Lot American All-Star Series Presented by PPM Racing Products headline the event. The first night pays $3,000 to win, while the second is $5,000. A full support card runs on both nights.
