This season Rocky Moore races with a brand-new Longhorn Chassis late model, complete with a new Chevrolet Performance 604 engine. Moore won the engine last fall as part of a raffle hosted by the American All-Star Series presented by PPM Racing Products.
The series offered 100 tickets at $75 apiece for a chance at the fresh engine. Forever the racer, Moore thought he had a great chance at the prize, despite the odds.
“I bought two [tickets],” Moore, 43, of Viper, Kentucky, said. “It just takes one to win.”
His optimism was met with equal pessimism from his fiancée, Brittany.
“I told him it was a waste of money,” said Brittany.
“I said [to Brittany], ‘Just wait and see. I’m winning this engine,’” Rocky said.
Rocky won it, much to Brittany’s surprise. Brittany added that Rocky being right happens “Not often. Just this one time.”
Either way, that crossed off a major item on Rocky’s wish list. It especially came in handy given the shortage of Chevrolet Performance crate engines. (See “Crate Engine Shortage: What You Need to Know”.)
Series director Joseph Rush said the raffle achieved its objectives and then some.
“The raffle served several purposes,” Rush said. “It was to help a driver get a motor at a lower price than they’d ever be able to. It was great exposure for our partner Rick Hendrick City Chevrolet [in Charlotte, North Carolina]. And, it helped cover some of the expenses of our 2020 season-ending banquet.”
For Rocky Moore, who recently returned to racing, he now has a complete new package to compete with.
“I was pretty much a rookie last year,” said Moore. “I raced 16 years ago, but got out of it [because of] kids and bills. Last year, I was more financially stable, and the urge to race has always been there, so I got back in it.”
This weekend, the American All-Star Series presented by PPM Racing Products holds another doubleheader weekend. On Friday, May 14, they head to Princeton Speedway in West Virginia. For Saturday, May 15, Mountain Motorsports Park in Isom, Kentucky, hosts a $5,000-to-win race.
