Skylar Marlar once aspired to race super late models. However, he said he found more fun competing in crate late models, such as those in the Dirt2Media American All-Star Series Presented by PPM Racing Products.
“The crate cars are more fun to race than the supers,” said Marlar, of Winfield, Tennessee. “Everyone is so even. We went to Bulls Gap [Tennessee, at Volunteer Speedway], and I was three tenths off fast time. I was 15th. You better have all your t’s crossed and i’s dotted, and be on your game. Everything you do to that car matters.”
Marlar’s no stranger to super late model racing, but now he races crate late models and modifieds.
“The expense in super late models has gotten so high that it’s hard to afford that,” Marlar said. “It’s hard working full-time, keeping [the super late model] up and getting to race only now and then, because there’s not a whole lot of super late model races near me.”
Despite the crate late model field being so tight, it doesn’t necessarily result in follow-the-leader racing. Marlar proved that at the last American All-Stars race at Lake Cumberland Speedway in Burnside, Kentucky. He started in 18th and moved up 15 spots to finish third in a 30-lap feature.
“I know Lake Cumberland, I grew up racing there,” said Marlar. “I have a lot of laps around that place. Come feature time, I knew the line you had to run, and nobody was running it.”
The competitors of the Dirt2Media American All-Star Series Presented by PPM Racing Products may be able to breathe a sigh of relief. Skylar Marlar’s modified commitments will take him away from running the series’ show on Saturday, July 22, at Lake Cumberland Speedway.
However, as Skylar Marlar has shown, you might want to keep an eye on the locals.
