Ever since Rockcastle Speedway reopened as a dirt track in 2020, it has prospered by focusing on its locals. Now the locals hope to give the regulars of the Dirt2Media American All-Star Series Presented by PPM Racing Products a run for their money. Saturday, July 15, marks the first race for the series at the Mount Vernon, Kentucky, track.
Two drag racers turned dirt modified drivers, Dwayne Harris and Kevin Jones, along with their wives Michelle Harris and Shawna Jones, took over the track this season. They hoped to instill in the dirt track some of what they found worked well in drag racing.
“The way the racers are treated … and the points program — we wanted to bring that to the dirt track,” said Harris. “I know other tracks have points — that’s nothing new. For our local guys, who never win a race, we give them show-up points. [With] the consistency [of being there every race], we hope at the end of the year they have some bragging rights. We got championship rings, and we’re still working on what we’re going to do for second- and third-place in points. We look forward to having a big banquet and recognizing every guy we can.”
If that doesn’t get your attention, there are other aspects of the track that will. Much of that seems to stem from a two-way street of appreciation.
“We’ve had a lot of compliments on our burgers,” Harris said. “We’ve got some of the best ladies around there [in the concessions]. They live and breathe working at the track. That’s the way a lot of the people are there. It blows my mind how appreciative they are to have an opportunity to work at the track.”
The Rockcastle Speedway regulars will be the story this Saturday, July 15. They’ll compete with the touring stars of the Dirt2Media American All-Star Series presented by PPM Racing Products. Two drivers to keep an eye on have deep American All-Star Series. Logan Walls, who won the touring series’ 2022 rookie of the year and A.J. Hicks, the 2021 and 2022 weekly series champion.
