Trouble At The Front Sets Up Thunder Road Flying Tiger Win For Jerry Winch
For Immediate Release TR17-052702
Barre, VT - - Jerry Winch of Plattsburgh, NY won the Mekkelsen RV 30-lap NAPA Flying Tiger feature at Thunder Road Sunday after leaders Kris Grout and Josh Lovely got hooked together on lap 27 and went off the top of the third turn in tandem. It was the first career win at Thunder Road for the two-time Airborne Raceway champion.
Grout, from the pole, led throughout while being shadowed by Lovely well ahead of the field. Lovely's attempt to race underneath Grout with three laps to go resulted in an inadvertent oxen-team exit when the pair connected and couldn't turn left through the third turn.
Runner-up David Redmond pressured Winch for the win, but was unable to get around him. Joe Becker was third, three car lengths back, just ahead of fourth-place Pete Ainsworth. Scott Payea, from 13th, was fifth. The second half of the top ten was Chip Grenier, Chuck Perkins, Joe Steffen, Reno Gervais and John Hayes.
"This has been along time coming," Winch said in victory lane. "I've had a couple of top-fives here, but I've taken a lot of lumps here and there's a lot of good cars."
Grout and Lovely were earlier heat winners along with Trevor Lyman. Grenier's sixth place run makes him, unofficially, the NAPA Flying Tiger point leader.
The Flying Tigers return to action on the Barre high banks on Howard's Market Night, Thursday, June 6 at 6 pm.
