Thunder Road Secures 2002 Permit; 43rd Season Opens May 5

Barre, VT - - The Barre Town Select Board issued Thunder Road Speedbowl a 2002
"special events" permit Tuesday night, ensuring that the track's 43rd stock car racing season
will begin as scheduled, Sunday, May 5. Thunder Road will host two ACT Dodge Tour events,
the Merchants Bank Freedom Lynx 150 opener, and the 31st Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day
Classic Sunday, May 26, before reverting to its traditional Thursday night summer schedule on
Howard's Market Night, June 6.
"Compromises have been reached and I think both sides are satisfied with the results,"
said Thunder Road co-owner Tom Curley. The permit issuance ended a protracted negotiation
regarding race track security and the Barre Town Police Department.
Thunder Road will host an Open House/Race Car Show at the track on Fisher Road atop
Quarry Hill in Barre Saturday, May 4 from 10 -12. Over 100 Late Model, NAPA Flying Tiger
and Allen Lumber Street Stock cars are expected to be on display. Admission is free of charge.
A practice session for all divisions, open to all spectators, will follow.
The Merchants Bank Freedom Lynx 150 is the second of 16 events on the 2002 ACT
Dodge Tour. Defending ACT Champion Pete Fecteau of Morrisville, VT will begin his title
defense at the New England Dodge Dealers 100 at Star Speedway in Epping, NH Saturday,
April 13 at 2 pm. Fecteau and 2001 Thunder Road Late Model Champion Cris Michaud are
among 38 Late Model teams entered to date.
The ACT Dodge Tour's third and final Thunder Road appearance is set for Saturday,
August 31 as part of a doubleheader with the Busch North NASCAR Series True Value 150.
The season will conclude with the 39th Vermont Milk Bowl, Sunday, Sunday, September 30.
