"TIM BRACKETT BEATS 27 OTHER PRO STOCKS AT OXFORD PLAINS SPEEDWAY"

OXFORD, ME---Tim Brackett waited for most of the 2001 to score a Pro Stock division win at Oxford Plains Speedway, but in 2002 he served notice that he's prepared for perhaps his best ever shot at the season long championship just two races into the new season. The 28 car field had but a lone caution flag, that on lap 24 when Mickey Green and Jeff White tangled racing off turn four, but that attempted restart was for naught and the outcome changed the complexion of the race for many of the hopefuls. Justin Belfiore led the first 19 laps before giving up the top spot to Kevin Kimball, but they tangled and Brad Hammond became the leader on lap 21. He led the field through the lap 24 doldrums and with Brackett now racing third the chase was on. Brackett got around Glenn Josselyn on lap 27 and Hammond on lap 29 to be the leader on lap 30. Then he was able to pull away for a couple more car lengths to nail down the $1500 winners check before a jam packed grandstand night of racing at the famed 3/8 mile oval. Hammond stayed in the runner up position and Josselyn was third. Al Hammond, the uncle of Brad and a three time OPS champion was fourth and Alan Wilson rounded out the top five.

Rookie Shawn Martin shocked the field in the Late Model Stock Car division with a wire to wire win. He even held off several veteran challengers for two restarts in the second half of the 30 lap main event for Oxford's number two division. Chris Bowie made it a career best ever run for the number two position and point leader Ricky Rolfe was third for the second time this year. Opening day winner Travis Adams finished fourth, just a couple of car lengths ahead of Ron Henry who rounded out the top five.

Shane Green led the final 21 laps of the 25 lap Limited Sportsman division event for his first win of the young season. Dana Grover had a chance to challenge on the lap 23 restart, but Green was a little quicker at the drop of the green flag and Grover had to settle for a close second. Cory Sanborn ran strong and avoided the two accidents that caused the restarts to finish third. Kurt Hewins, a former champion, was fourth and Professor Neil Martin posted one of his best ever finishes at fifth and was a contender for the entire race.

Former Champion Jon Brill had little trouble winning the opening round of Strictly Stock racing. He was much faster than that of runner up Dale Brackett and third place finisher Mark Newman. John Bernard was fourth in the opening round and Gary Davis posted a best ever effort at fifth. In the second 20 lap Strictly Stock main event Joe Hutter led start to finish in the non-stop edition of the entry division. It was his first ever OPS win and he did it despite the constant pressure of Scott Belskis and Larry Emerson who was looking for a third straight win, but settled for third instead. Darryl Cook was fourth and Jon Richardson fifth.

Rookie sensation Jeff Moon is also the Mini Stock division point leader and now he's a race winner. He survived all the spins and near misses that slowed nearly half of the 28 car field to lead 14 of the 20 laps to post his first ever win in the Saturday night program. After a super successful career in the Big Apple Texaco Outlaw division he made the move to the more race 4 cylinder set. Butch Keene was second, after winning the last time out, and Jimmy Robbins rebounded with a third place finish after being in the concrete wall two weeks ago. Danny Morris was fourth and Mark Collins rounded out the top five.

Legend Car veteran Doug Coombs won the 25 lap NELCAR Legend Cars main event. Rookie Dan Williams started his Legend Car career with a runner up finish and early leader Dale Stanley was third. Bob Weymouth and Chad Harrington rounded out the top five.
