Groveton, NH - - Ray Stearns of East Corinth, VT won the ACT Flying Tiger Subway Grand Slam Series 50-lap main event at Riverside Speedway Saturday night. Stearns swapped the lead with Chip Grenier repeatedly through laps 44-47, then held off Doug Murphy for his first win since opening day at Thunder Road.
Grenier, who wound up sixth, took the lead from pole sitter Fred Dezan on lap18 and held it until his back and forth battle with Stearns. Bill Sawyer, Joe Becker and Pete Ainsworth completed the top five.
The race was well-driven and action-packed, including a red flag for Joe Steffen, who barrel-rolled off the top of turn one near the halfway mark, but was not seriously injured. Forty-four cars were on hand vying for 26 starting spots in the four-race Subway Series, which concludes Sunday, September 8 at Barre's Thunder Road.
Craig Bushey of Cambridge, VT retained as the series' point leader, despite having to come from the rear to finish eighth, after an earlier spin-out. Bushey leads Joe Becker 256-234. Doug Murphy is third with 221 points.
